We are middle school teachers in a pre-k to 8th grade, Title 1 school that serves a diverse community of students living in the Chinatown, Tribeca, and Lower East Side neighborhoods of New York City. Our students come from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, with more than ¾ of our school population receiving free lunch. In spite of the high percentage of economically disadvantaged student body, our school performs above the city-wide average on standardized state exams. Another goal of our school community, aside from academic achievement, is to foster students’ artistic talents, athletic abilities, and social/emotional well-being. We strive to fulfill that promise through rigorous academic standards balanced by a wide variety of extracurricular activities, such as athletic team sports and the visual arts. Building three-dimensional models allows students to utilize their artistic skills and creativity.
